They also designed and implemented brand-new processes—PPE distribution and tracking, screening at entrances, rapid reporting from the EMR, and support for infection surveillance and contact tracing.<br /><br />She outlined major COVID challenges: identifying a new patient population in systems not built for it, shifting daily reporting requirements, PPE shortages and fit testing logistics, staffing shortages, unit “hot/warm” designation, visitor exceptions (including end-of-life visits), and creating alternative care sites. Lifespan built extensive reporting dashboards and archived decisions and policies in a centralized repository (“playbook”) for future learning and regulatory review.<br /><br />In Q&A, Williams recommended FEMA’s free online incident command training, emphasized drills and role clarity to reduce stress, and noted that faster decision-making and cross-functional teamwork are lasting improvements from the pandemic experience.
