Video Summary
The session introduces NACU’s Healthcare Quality Competency Framework as a practical tool to strengthen healthcare quality and safety practice, professional growth, and organizational impact. NACU (founded in 1976) positions the workforce as the key resource for achieving better outcomes and highlights research on “ROIQ,” showing that investing in quality and safety capability can improve outcomes and deliver financial return. The presenters explain why a common competency standard is needed now: quality roles are expanding from isolated projects to enterprise influence, expectations for safety, equity, value, and compliance are rising, titles vary widely, and capability gaps create inconsistent outcomes.

The framework is an expert-created, validated global standard covering eight domains, 28 competencies, and hundreds of skills, with proficiency levels from foundational to advanced. Domains include: Quality Leadership & Integration; Performance & Process Improvement; Population Health & Care Transitions; Health Data Analytics; Patient Safety; Regulatory & Accreditation; Quality Review & Accountability; and Professional Engagement.

Participants are encouraged to use the framework as a “mirror and compass” for self-assessment, gap identification, development planning, team capability mapping, role design, hiring, and alignment with strategy. The session emphasizes starting small: pick one or two priority competencies, define “next level” behaviors, choose targeted development actions, and embed the framework into existing performance and career conversations.
