Video Summary
The NACU Learning Lab introduces a webinar on “Inclusive Approaches to Strategic Planning for Improved Quality,” offering one hour of CPHQ-CE credit and highlighting NACU’s expanded COVID-19 resources, including weekly/daily tools, expert interviews, and a focus on patient and family engagement (noting Healthcare Decision Day). NACU also announces unusual, time-limited CPHQ discounts, new instructor-led virtual prep, and plans for remote online exam proctoring due to test-center closures. The CEO emphasizes that quality and safety competencies will be even more critical post-COVID and promotes NACU’s Healthcare Quality Competency Framework and self-assessment.

Presenters Sharon Fenn and Michelle Argood from South Central Foundation (SCF), a two-time Malcolm Baldrige Award recipient serving 55 Alaska communities, explain SCF’s relationship-based, Native-values-driven system. SCF calls patients “customer-owners” to reflect shared responsibility and engagement. They describe how strategic planning evolved from a closed, siloed exercise into a transparent, standardized, organization-wide process that links corporate goals to departmental annual plans and individual performance plans.

SCF’s annual cycle includes an environmental assessment, strategic inputs, approval of corporate initiatives, departmental planning, performance planning, and quarterly scorecard monitoring. A cross-divisional functional committee structure (with broad representation and executive sponsors) drives alignment and decision-making. SCF built an internal strategic planning software tool to improve visibility, collaboration, and progress tracking.

Michelle outlines SCF’s COVID-19 response: incident command with a pandemic addendum, rapid shifts to telehealth and drive-up services, dedicated respiratory pathways, workforce protections (remote work, lodging, scrubs), centralized PPE tracking, and daily organization-wide communications guided by existing committees and infrastructure.
