When done correctly, practitioner peer review can be a powerful tool to improve patient safety and quality of care. This session focuses on peer review in the acute care setting; specifically, from the administrative lens, but also includes broad concepts that can be applied throughout the care continuum.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the purpose of robust practitioner peer review in developing a comprehensive quality management program
  • Understand the difference between individual record peer review, ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE) and focused professional practice evaluation (FPPE)
  • Recognize the importance of having a defined peer review process and governing policy that exceeds basic regulatory requirements
  • Formulate robust OPPE profiles that include specialty-specific indicators
  • Determine next steps in linking peer review outcomes and trends to hospital-based physician contracting
